It all started with Crochet
Butterfield Alpaca Ranch was founded by Tashia Butterfield, a professional crochet instructor and fiber artist. It was after teaching in a local yarn store in Chicago that Tashia learned about natural fibers and the animals that produced them. In 2011, just before leaving for South Korea to teach English, Tashia visited an alpaca ranch near Rockford, IL and was hooked. Just a couple weeks later - with the purchase of a pregnant alpaca, Joy - Butterfield Alpaca Ranch was born. Upon returning to the United States in 2012, Tashia established the Ranch in south central Nebraska where her family has more than 150 years of history. Tashia now raises both the huacaya and suri breeds for their luxurious fiber, shears them herself every spring, and produces products from their fiber. Her primary store in Alma, NE focuses on American grown, American made products. Tashia teaches crochet and knitting classes at the Alma store and other fiber arts events across the country. You can follow her on YouTube as "Butterfield Alpacas & Fiber Arts" and "Forever Bliss Crochet". The alpaca channel has over 100 videos about raising alpacas and the related fiber arts. The next time you are in Nebraska, come on by to meet the 26 alpacas and 7 llamas of Butterfield Alpaca Ranch.
